Eli Ambrose VanZant1

M, b. 22 April 1815, d. 30 July 1903
Eli VanZant
Eli Ambrose VanZant was born on 22 April 1815 at Virginia.2 He was the son of Zachariah Noble VanZant and Letitia Clayton.3,4 Eli Ambrose VanZant married Hautentia Renoe on 5 May 1836 at Highland County, Ohio.3 During the Civil War, when Morgan's raiders under the command of Confederate General John Morgan made their infamous raid into southern Indiana and southern Ohio, they replaced their spent horses by stealing from the local farmers. Eli was a victim of one of these raids having a horse or some horses stolen by Morgan's men.3 Eli Ambrose VanZant married Mary Jane Underwood, daughter of Zephaniah Underwood and Nancy McCullough, on 8 October 1871 at Highland County, Ohio.5 Eli Ambrose VanZant died on 30 July 1903 at Washington Township, Highland County, Ohio, at age 88.3 His obituary read, "Eli Van Zant was born April 22, 1815, died July 30, 1903, being 88 years, 3 months and 8 days old. He was a son of Zachariah Noble and Letitia Vanzant, and was one of a family of seven boys and five girls, all of whom have passed to their reward except two, John C. Vanzant and Matilda Stultz. When he was a small boy he came with his parents to Highland County, Ohio, where he continued to reside during all of his long and useful life. In the year 1836 he was married to Hautentia Renoe, with whom he lived till 1869, when she was called to her home above. To them were born three children, Samuel B., Zachariah Noble and Lucretia Ellen. Two of these, Zachariah Noble and Lucretia Ellen are living; Samuel B. died in February, 1890. Mr. Vanzant was again married, in 1871, to Mary Jane Dunn, who still lives to mourn the loss of a devoted husband. In early life he was converted and joined the M. E. Church at Marshall and during all of his long life he continued to be a conscientious Christian man, a devoted student of the Bible, and kind and obliging neighbor. His great ambition seemed to be to assist his friends and neighbors and any who were in need or distress of any kind. The poor and needy always found in him a friend. No sacrifice seemed to great if he could in any way assist those in distress. Truly a good man has fallen, and his friends and neighbors rise up to call him blessed."3 He was buried at Prospect Cemetery, Berrysville, Highland County, Ohio.3
