David Russell McMullen

M, b. 28 May 1910, d. November 1982
David Russell McMullen
David Russell McMullen was born on 28 May 1910 at Spencer, Roane County, West Virginia.1,2 He was the son of Andrew Jackson McMullen and Olive Belle Alvis.3,1,4 David Russell McMullen and Ted McMullen spent a great deal of time together fishing, hunting and just general boy's things. He was what they called at that time "feeble minded" and in today's day and age would be considered autistic. He had the mind of a child, but he was a sweet, gentle man, and did his best at all times to please everyone. He spent most of his time between his sisters Dell and Velva, but lived in an old summer kitchen behind the family home. Both sisters enjoyed teasing him and that would make him cry. He had a Canada Goose which he named Petey, and Petey followed him everywhere like a dog. By 1947 Russell had been committed to the Spencer State Hospital which was out on Ravenswood Pike, but he was allowed to come home on weekends. He still had Petey who was beginning to show his years. By 1979 he could no longer walk or speak, and was confined to the Spencer State Hospital on a full time basis. He lived a fairly full life and was a true friend to all he met.5 He died in November 1982 at Spencer, Roane County, West Virginia, at age 72.1,2 He was buried at Spencer Memorial Cemetery, Spencer, Roane County, West Virginia.6
