Harmon Greathouse
M, b. circa 1720, d. 10 June 1782
Harmon Greathouse The following is from the draft copy Descendants of Mary Stull Greathouse by Chris Bailey. In a 1792 court document Harmon declared his age as 75. (Chancery Ct. folder 1681 Baltimore Co.,MD. Marriages). Harmon was probably unmarried when he was sponsor to the baptism of a child June 2, 1745, at St. Michael's Church, Germantown, PA. He was NEVER married to Anna Maria Baretinin, the co-sponsor, who was a single woman at the time. The misinterpretation of this record created a "first-wife" for Harmon which he never had. His one and only wife was Mary Stull. The census of 1790 shows a Harmon Greathouse and his wife residing in Baltimore County, Maryland. By Oct 10 1753 Harmon was living on a tract of land across the Potomac River in Hampshire Co.,WV. He acted as a chain carrier there on March 18 1754 for Thomas Rutherford. On Nov. 18, 1755, Harmon Greathouse 'of the Colony of Virginia, farmer' sold his tract 'Chestnut Spring' in Frederick Co.,MD to John Hildebrand. Harmon was a blacksmith, by trade, and received a bequest of blacksmith tools from the will of his father. On June 24, 1749 Harmon had a 50 acre farm called 'Chestnut Springs' surveyed and patented. This land was located on Antietam Creek in Frederick, present day Washington, Co.,MD. He sold this tract to John Hildebrand on Nov. 18 1755. On Mar 2 1755 Harmon Greathouse had two more tracts of land surveyed for him in Hampshire County, WV. The first of these was a 275 acre tract original warranted by Solomon Turpin of Frederick. On Mar 28, 1755 Greathouse also acted as a chain carrier for surveyor Thomas Rutherford in surveying a 194 acre tract of land on the Potomac for John Friend of Frederick, Co. MD. In 1773, Harmon took his family and settled in the northern part of Ohio Co.,VA in present day Brooke County, WV near the Hancock County Line. The land on which he settled was on a creek which he called Harmon's Run. It later became known as Harmons Creek and flows into the Ohio River near Holliday's Cove, present day Weirton, WV. In 1780 Harmon produced certificates for two tracts of 400 acres each. The land records office at Richmond, VA, show that a land patent was granted to Harmon Greathouse in Mar 8, 1785 for 800 acres of land in the county of Yohogania, VA. Along Harmons Creek. Patrick Henry, Esq. Governor of the Commonwealth of VA in consideration of the Ancient Composition of Four Pounds Sterling paid by Harmon Greathouse into the Treasury of the Commonwealth of VA. granted the patent. On Aug 4, 1788 Harmon and Mary sold two parcels of land - 195 acres including Cove Pond and part of Harmon's Creek to their son Isaac for l50 lbs., 218 acres of land and a sawmill on Harmon's Creek to their son Harmon, Jr. for 150 lbs. and 387 acres on both sides of Harmon's Creek to their son Jonathan for 200 lbs. Almost immediately after they left Virginia and returned to Maryland. Harmon was a member of an organization known as the "Rangers on the Frontier" 1778-1782 (Ref. PA Archives, Third Series, Vo. XXIII, p 206); Served as a volunteer in Col. William. Crawford's regiment during the expedition against Sandusky (1782), (Ref PA Archives Sixth Series, Vol. II, pages 153 and 390.) He In 1770 or early in 1771, Harmon Greathouse, together with his wife and ten children, moved from Frederick County, Maryland, to the Commonwealth of Virginia, settling in what was then known as Augusta County. Augusta County, at that time, took in most of what is now the State of West Virginia. Later, the area in which he settled was called Yohogania County, then Ohio County. In 1797 Brooke County was formed from land cut off from Ohio County. The Greathouse lands all lay in what is now Brooke County, West Virginia. Brooke County is located in what is now known as the Panhandle of West Virginia. This is a very narrow strip of land located between the western boundary of Pennsylvania and the Ohio River which forms the boundary between West Virginia and Ohio.
When Harmon Greathouse moved to Virginia he settled on the waters of Harmon's Creek. "History of the Panhandle", published in 1879, says that Harmon Greathouse was the first settler in what is now Brooke County. Harmon's Creek, site of the Greathouse settlement, was named for him. The Rev. Joseph Doddridge in his book, "Doddridge's Notes", says this of these early pioneers: "A fierce, implacable foe met them on every hand. Braddock's Trail was the route by which the greater number crossed the mountains. Some came by way of Bedford and Fort Ligonier, few were encumbered with much baggage. Land was their object. Raising a crop of grain, however small, entitled the settler to 400 acres of land."
Although Harmon Greathouse settled on the waters of Harmon's Creek in 1771, he did not receive a patent on his land until 1785. In 1785, the Commonwealth of Virginia granted him a patent to 800 acres. Daniel, his eldest son, settled on 400 acres located in the Mingo Bottom of the Ohio River in 1771 but sold his rights to this land in 1775. John Greathouse settled on 400 acres, adjoining that of his brother Daniel. In 1774, Gabriel Greathouse acquired patent on 400 acres of land adjoining that of his father (Harmon). William Greathouse owned land on Harmon's Creek, probably 400 acres, prior to his death in 1791. The other sons, Isaac, Harmon Jr., and Jonathan, all acquired land from their father after 1785, from his original tract of 800 acres. In 1788, Harmon Greathouse, Sr., and his wife Mary sold "218 acres and a saw mill", part of his original tract. to their son Harmon Jr. for g 150. Prior to this time he had sold or given to his son Jonathan 122 acres. Jonathan, in turn sold this tract to Jonathan Boyle and Jonathan Hunt for g 100. This sale was made just prior to his ill-fated attempt to migrate to Kentucky.
By 1788 Harmon Sr. had disposed of all of his holdings in Virginia. There is no record of his ever again owning land in the state after that year. Furthermore, there is no record of a will or letter of administration for him in either Brooke or Ohio counties. Church records have been searched for entries concerning his death and burial but nothing has been found. Harmon and his wife Mary, in 1786, gave power of attorney to Margret White, Mary's sister, to dispose of their holdings in Frederick County, Maryland. He Harmon served in the Revolutionary War during the Sandusky indian border Campaign in Landash, Erie County, Ohio. He was a member of the Crawfordexpedition. Records sh Greathouse settlement, was named for him. Reports that he was killed during that campaign a r is also a deed recorded in Deed Book 1,Page 96, Ohio County, Virginia in which a n authoriza Records of Harmons service can be found in the Pennsylvania Archives,Sixth Series, Vol.II, pa. He was born circa 1720 at Heidleberg Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Henry Groethausen and Ann Pippen. Harmon Greathouse married Mary Magdelina Stull, daughter of John Stull and Martha Jones, circa 1745 at Frederick County, Maryland. Harmon Greathouse died on 10 June 1782 at Landash OH battle. He died after 1790 at Baltimore County, Maryland. He died between 1794 and 1795 at Carroll County, Maryland.
