John James Sturgis

     John James Sturgis was born in 1835 at Fayette County, Pennsylvania.1,2,3 He was the son of Enos Sturgis and Diana Jones.1,2 John James Sturgis died in July 1864 at Deep Bottom, Henrico County, Virginia, His death was the result of wounds received in this Civil War battle. The battle of Deep Bottom was fought in Henrico County, Virginia during the Richmond-Petersburg Campaign from June 1864 through March 1865. Maj. General Winfield Scott commanded the Union Army during the battle. During the night of July 26-27, 1864 the Union II Corps and two divisions of Sheridan's cavalry under command of Gen. Scott crossed to the north side of the James River to threaten Richmond. During this battle there were approximately 1,000 casualties and resulted in a Confederate victory. The Union withdrew back across the river.3

     John Sturgis was born on 22 March 1749 at England.1 He was the son of Thomas Sturgis and Catherine Roberts. John Sturgis married first Leah Phillips, daughter of Samuel Phillips and Keziah Abraham, on 15 September 1772 at Smithfield, Bradford County, Pennsylvania.2 He enlisted in Capt. Josiah Hamer's Company of First Pennsylvania Battalion in October, 1775, commanded by Colonel John Philip deHass under whom he served on expedition in Crown Point and Ticonderoga. He served from October, 1775, to November 13, 1776. His name also appears on the rolls as a private in Capt. Peter Hosleins Company, Philadelphia Militia, September, 1781. John Sturgis is also given in list of associations and militia of City of Philadelphia, a return of the 4th, 5th, and 6th Classes of Chesnut Ward under command of Thomas Bradford. Residence during Revolutionary War in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He came to Philadelphia from England with his brothers, Nathan Sturgis and Amos Sturgis, settled near Philadelphia, Pennsylvaniia, and afterwards living in Philadelphia." John Sturgis married second Frances Howard in 1800. John Sturgis died on 4 February 1822 at Woodbridgetown, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, at age 72. He was buried at Woodbridge Union Cemetery, Georges Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania.3
