     Ruby May Palmer was born on 18 October 1902 at Simons, Ashtabula County, Ohio.1 She was the daughter of John Lawrence Palmer and Ollie Alvina Manning.2,3,4 Ruby May Palmer married Sylvester Franklin Chaffee, son of Franklin Lafayette Chaffee and Della May Miller, on 18 April 1922 at Jackson, Jackson County, Michigan.5,6 Ruby May Palmer died on 10 July 1989 at Jackson County Medical Care Facility, Jackson, Jackson County, Michigan, at age 86.7,8 Her obituary read, "Ruby M. Chaffee, 86, of Jackson died Monday at the Jackson County Medical Care Facility. She was preceded in death by her husband, Sylvester, and one son. She is survived by one son and one daughter. Arrangements are by the Charles J. Burden & Son Funeral Home, 1806 E. Michigan."8 She was buried at Roseland Memorial Gardens, Jackson, Jackson County, Michigan.9,8

Samuel William Greathouse

M, b. 15 March 1811, d. 28 December 1901
     Samuel William Greathouse was born on 15 March 1811 at Kanawaha County, Virginia.1 He was the son of John Joseph Greathouse and Sarah Rachel McDade. Samuel William Greathouse married Sudna Grace "Sidney" Tanner, daughter of Samuel Tanner and Sudna Elizabeth Carpenter, in 1833 at Roane County, Virginia.2 Samuel William Greathouse Samuel served in the Confederate army during the civil war. He was a member of the 19th and 20th Virginia Cavalry. The 1850 census shows him living with his family in Wirt Co, VA. He died on 28 December 1901 at Linden, Roane County, West Virginia, at age 90.1

John McMullen1

     John McMullen was born on 11 June 1845 at at home on McMullen Run, Jackson County, Virginia.2 He was the son of Matthew McMullen and Sarah Greathouse.2 John McMullen was mustered into the Union Army as a Private on 10 Feb 1862. He was assigned to Company G of the 9th Regiment of Virginia Volunteers, serving under Captain Henry C. McWorter who later became president of the West Virginia supreme court. He was promoted to Corporal in March 1863, and was killed in action during a skirmish with confederate bushwhackers.2 He died on 14 September 1863 at Spencer, Roane County, West Virginia, at age 18.2 He was buried at Spencer Memorial Cemetery, Spencer, Roane County, West Virginia.2,3

Charles Nathan McMullen1

Charles Nathan McMullen
     Charles Nathan McMullen was born on 28 April 1865 at Roane County, West Virginia.2 He was the son of Matthew McMullen and Sarah Greathouse. Charles Nathan McMullen married Sarah M. "Sally" McGill, daughter of John McGill and Malinda F. Greathouse, on 30 June 1900 at Calhoun County, West Virginia.2 After the death of his mother in 1905, Charles relocated to Baca County, Colorado. In 1924 he is found in St. Cloud, Florida where he was elected mayor by a write-in vote. Shortly thereafter, he returned to Colorado, but he died and is buried in St. Cloud. When he first moved to Colorado it is apparent that he was accompanied by his cousin Davis G. Greathouse and family. Also living nearby were the McGills, relatives of Charles' wife. He left West Virginia at an early age and entered the Army, eventually achieving the rank of sargent. He served in the Indian Wars in Wyoming. He filed a homestead claim in Colorado, and in 1918 was awarded a patent on 321 acres in Baca County.2 Was mayor of St. Cloud, Florida between 1923 and 1925. Charles Nathan McMullen died on 6 February 1941 at St. Cloud, Osceola County, Florida, at age 75.2,3 He was buried at Mt. Peace Cemetery, St. Cloud, Osceola County, Florida; Section B, Block 64, Lot 5.3

     Mary Morris was born in 1757. She was the daughter of Richard Morris and Mary Scott Watts. James McDade

M, b. 1749, d. 30 July 1833
     James McDade was born in 1749. He married Rachel Tanner, daughter of Edward Tanner III and Rachel u, on 17 March 1769 at Mason County, Virginia. James McDade James McDade served with the Mason County, VA line during the Revolutionary War. His pension was paid commencing 1819. He served in five battles and numerous skirmishes, including the battles of Germantown, Trenton, Camden (Hobkirks Hill), and Eutaw Springs, South Carolina. He suffered three wounds: a shot to the ankle, slashed on the shoulder by a sword, and run through by a British bayonet finally at Eutaw Springs. He spent the winter at Valley Forge. McDade enlisted initially in January 1777, then later as a substitute for Uriah Gandee. He was listed as 5'7' tall weighing 145 lbs with a ruddy complexion. He died on 30 July 1833 at Mason County, Virginia.

John B. Greathouse

     John B. Greathouse The 1850 Virginia census shows John B. Greathouse and family to be living in Wirt County. He was born on 15 March 1810 at Mason County, Virginia. He was the son of John Joseph Greathouse and Sarah Rachel McDade. John B. Greathouse married an unknown person on 12 February 1834 at Jackson County, Virginia. He married an unknown person on 3 November 1880 at Wirt County, West Virginia. He died on 28 December 1901 at age 91.

     John Joseph Greathouse was born on 1 March 1774 at Harrison County, Virginia. He was the son of Daniel Greathouse and Mary Morris. John Joseph Greathouse Marriage records in Harrison County, WV show the union of John Greathouse with Millie Gillespy on April 8, 1793. It is not certain that this was the same John Greathouse who married Sarah McDade in 1806. It is believed that this marriage pertains to Johann Greathouse. He married Sarah Rachel McDade, daughter of James McDade and Rachel Tanner, on 17 September 1806 at Mason County, Virginia. John Joseph Greathouse Records of Mason County, Colson Hall, Morgantown, WV PAGE JVW 1006 Rolls 3 & 4 DATA TEXT Matrimony, Marriage Bond, Concent (sic) dated September 17, 1806. This is a marriage bon County, WV courthouse a marriage bondbetween 'John Gratehous e and Sary Mickdade'. The bond. He According to military records, John Greathouse served in the War of 1812 for three months, receiving his discharge on August 24, 1814. He John Greathouse came to northwestern Virginia from Harrison County in about 1815 after having served in the War of 1812. He was a cousin to Samuel Tanner, the founder of present day Spencer, WV. He acquired a large parcel of land in the Spring Creek area on which he built his home. In May, 1857 he and his wife, the former Sarah McDade, deeded to trustees of the county of Roane, Virginia the property which became Spencer Memorial Cemetery. John and Sarah are both buried there. Gravestones for both John and Sarah have last names spelled GRATEHOUSE. He died on 4 July 1866 at Spencer, Roane County, West Virginia, at age 92.1 He was buried at Spencer Memorial Cemetery, Spencer, Roane County, West Virginia.1

     Edward Neddy Greathouse was born on 17 November 1808 at Mason County, Virginia.1 He was the son of John Joseph Greathouse and Sarah Rachel McDade. Edward Neddy Greathouse married Matilda Elizabeth Blosser, daughter of Henry Blosser and Isabelle Stewart, on 21 December 1833 at Jackson County, Virginia.1 Edward Neddy Greathouse died on 12 November 1897 at Linden, Roane County, West Virginia, at age 88. He was buried at Spencer Memorial Cemetery, Spencer, Roane County, West Virginia.2
