William McNees1

M, b. circa 1850
William McNees was born circa 1850 at Worth Township, Butler County, Pennsylvania.1,2 He was the son of John Taylor McNees and Eliza Beaty.1 Mary McNees (sister of Rose McNees who was the secretary and family record keeper) was 85 years old in 1955 when Wilbert Harold McNees started these records. She told him the following information. William married a Beachem and then moved to Maryland to a naval base on the Atlantic coast where he became a ship's carpenter. Both William and his wife died of tuberculosis, leaving one daughter and one son. The doctor contacted the wife's parents who asked that their granddaughter be returned to them. Since their daughter had married beneath her, they did not want the grandson. The doctor took the grandson and sent him to college but he had poor lungs so the doctor sent him to Texas to live a cowboy's life. His health improved, he entered politics, and then he bought cattle. He was taking the herd to Alabama to sell when they reached sugar cane fields. The cattle broke away from the herdsmen, ate the cane, and all died. The education that he had been given qualified him to teach, which he did and became the head of the department of education. After his death, McNeese College was named to honor him. The doctor had not known that the family did not use an "e" on the end of his name so he spelled it that way. Our McNees family started in Scotland and did not use "e" on the end. But when they went to Ulster, some married Catholic girls and ended up spelling it the Irish way. Mary probably confused this story with that of John McNeese who McNeese College is named after.1
