VanZandt graduated at Point Marion High School, Point Marion, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, in 1909 with a high school diploma and she taught in the Fayette County schools for some time before entering normal school.1 She graduated at California State Normal School, California, Washington County, Pennsylvania, in 1915 with a 2-year teaching degree. She taught in the Point Marion High School for ten years.1 She graduated at West Virginia University, Morgantown, Monongalia County, West Virginia, in 1925 with a Bachelor of Arts, at which time she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa.1 She taught English at South Union Township High School, Uniontown, Fayette County, Pennsylvania starting in Sep 1926.1 She graduated at West Virginia University, Morgantown, Monongalia County, West Virginia, in 1927 with a Master of Arts in History.1 She graduated at University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, in 1940 with a Doctor of Philosophy.1 She died on 20 January 1979 at Morgan Manor Nursing Home, Morgantown, Monongalia County, West Virginia, at age 87.5,2 She was buried at Evergreen Memorial Park, Springhill Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania.5,2 Her obituary reads as follows: "Dr. Mildred VanZandt died Saturday, Jan. 20, 1979, in the Morgan Manor Nursing Home, Morgantown. She was 87. Dr. VanZandt was born May 2, 1891, in Dilliner, the daughter of the late Isaac M. and Cora Duff VanZandt. Dr. VanZandt, who taught 54 years in Uniontown, Point Marion, and Albert Gallatin District schools before retiring had not only a long but varied teaching career which spanned from 1916 through 1970. She began teaching in the McKinley Hill School and then the Point Marion School. She taught 18 years in South Union School before returning to Point Marion High in 1947. She remained at Point Marion through 1960 and then transferred to Albert Gallatin High School from where she retired. Her duties at Point Marion High School extended beyond teaching and included some inovations which since have evolved into normal full time positions. She was designated as Dean of Women which carried with it responsibility for checking attendance, conseling students for careers and colleges and working with children who had troubles in the classroom and at home. In addition she sponsored the Debate Club, Forensic Club, was an advisor to the Student Congress and the student yearbook. Dr. VanZandt was one of those instrumental in organizing and promoting the Public Library in Point Marion. She attended Point Marion School and was the valedictorian of the first high school graduating class in 1909. She received a Bachelor of Arts from California College and a master's degree from West Virginia University. She received her Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. VanZandt was the first woman in Point Marion to be elected to the Phi Beta Kappa honorary society. She was also a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, Doctorial Association of the University of Pittsburgh, Morgantown Branch of the American Association of University Women, Fayette-Westmoreland Historical Society, Uniontown College Club, Pennsylvania State Education Association, a lifetime member of the National Education Association, the Point Marion Garden Club and the Point Marion United Methodist Church. She taught Sunday School in the church for many years. In 1977 she was presented the first Outstanding Citizenship Award given by the Point Marion Business and Professional Women's Club. She is survived by a brother, Elmer B. VanZandt of Point Marion and two sisters, Mrs. Mabel Huchette of Morgantown and Mrs. Cora Householder of Elizabeth. Funeral services were held Tuesday in the Richard R. Herold Funeral Home, Point Marion, with Rev. Ronald R. Hoellein, officiating. Interment was in Evergreen Memorial Park, Point Marion."5

Hostutler.3 Lewis Frank Garlow married Pearl Hazel VanZandt, daughter of Leonidas James VanZandt and Emma Frances Myers, on 20 June 1908.1 Lewis Frank Garlow farmed in Cloud County, Kansas.1 He died on 2 March 1981 at age 96.3

     Griffith Morris was born on 2 September 1785 at New Briton, Bucks County, Pennsylvania.1,2 He was the son of William Morris and Ann Griffith.1,3 Griffith Morris married Hannah Springer, daughter of Dennis Springer and Maria Elizabeth Small, in 1808 at Fayette County, Pennsylvania.1,3 Griffith Morris owned land lying along the Monongahela River in Greene County, Pennsylvania opposite Point Marion.1 He died on 13 February 1855 at Greene County, Pennsylvania, at age 69.1,3 He was buried at Morris Family Cemetery, Dunkard Township, Greene County, Pennsylvania.1
