Albert Henry Palmer1

M, b. 21 April 1849, d. 21 February 1898
Albert Henry Palmer was born on 21 April 1849 at Beaver Dam, Erie County, Pennsylvania.1,2 He was the son of Robert Ralph Palmer and Eliza Melvina Boardman.1 Albert Henry Palmer married Mary Emmaline Tobias, daughter of Asa Hunter Tobias and Hannah B. French, on 11 October 1869.1,3 Albert Henry Palmer died on 21 February 1898 at Peru, El Dorado County, California, at age 48.1,2 One obituary read, "On Sunday last Mr. A. H. Palmer, whose family reside in this city, died at Peru, Cal., from the effects of burns received from an oil well gas explosion. He was born in Beaver Dam, Pa., Feb. 21, 1849, and has lived in Titusville and vicinity nearly all his life. Ever since he was able to work he has followed the pursuit of oil well driller. This kind of labor called him to all sections of the Oil Creek region, Texas, Indiana, Ohio and California. He went to California early last summer and remained there up to the time of his unfortunate and untimely death. He was a member of the Knights of Pythias and that organization will take charge of the remians when they reach this city Sunday afternoon. Arrangements for the funeral will then be made. He leaves a wife, one son and two daughters, one a teacher in the schools on the south side and the other a graduate hospital nurse." A later obituary read, "Brought Home for Burial. The Remains of A. H. Palmer Arrived Here Sunday. The remains of Albert H. Palmer, who was fatally burned near Peru, Cal., last Sunday by an explosion of gas at a drilling well owned by Stewart Bros., arrived in the city Sunday afternoon in charge of Charles Feely, a fellow workman. The body was met at the depot by the members of Titusville Lodge, Knights of Pythias, and escorted to the undertaking establishment of McNett & Co., and after the necessary preparations for burial had been made, taken thence to the family residence on Bank steet, where this afternoon at 3 o'clock the funeral services will be held. From Mr. Feely the correct details of the accident which caused Mr. Palmer's death were first learned. It seems that he (Palmer) had been on tour about three hours when the explosion occurred. The well had reached a depth of about 1,200 feet when the drill encountered a pocket, or heavy gas vein, and the inflammable fluid flowing into the derrick took fire from the forge located there and the explosion followed. Mr. Palmer, who was alone in the derrick at the time, was terribly burned about the body, but ran out of the derrick and a distance of thirty rods when he fell, and his tool-dresser and others, who were attracted to the scene by the sound of the explosion, overtook him. They extinguished the burning remnants of this clothing and had him conveyed to Santa Paula, where the next day he died from heart failure superinduced by the terrible burns and shock received. The rig was totally destroyed by fire. The funeral will be under the auspices of the Knights of Pythias."1 He was buried at Woodlawn Cemetery, Titusville, Crawford County, Pennsylvania.1
