Lewis Henry Stauffer1

M, b. 14 June 1821, d. 20 April 1907
Lewis Henry Stauffer was born on 14 June 1821 at Lambertsville, Somerset County, Pennsylvania.1 He was the son of Christopher Stauffer and Elizabeth Cupp.1 Lewis Henry Stauffer married Sarah Sipe, daughter of Jacob Sipe and Elizabeth Dull, on 24 October 1852.1 Lewis Henry Stauffer died on 20 April 1907 at Paint Township, Somerset County, Pennsylvania, at age 85.1 His obituary read, "Back as far as the earliest years of the seventeenth century can be traced the ancestral lineage of the four people who appear in the accompanying cut, and who until Saturday afternoon comprised four surviving generations of the family of Lewis H. STAUFFER. That line was rudely broken, however, at 4:10 o'clock Saturday evening, when Lewis STAUFFER, the aged gentleman in the cut, expired after a long illness of diseases incident to old age, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Sarah Ellen SAYLOR, widow of the late Moses SAYLOR, of Sell street, Eighth Ward. In the accompanying cut appear the late Lewis H. STAUFFER: his daughter, Mary, who is the wife of William PENROD, of Arrow, Somerset County: her daughter, Mrs. Amanda CRISSEY, and Mrs. CRISSEY's son, Irvin Jennings CRISSEY. In the death of Lewis H. STAUFFER Somerset County is deprived of on of its oldest native citizens: a man who not only was born in that county, but resided there up until the final days of his career. His ancestors, too, were pioneer residents of Somerset County, and the name of Stauffer has become firmly established in that part of the State. The early Stauffers seemed to have sprung up in New York, and to that locality can be traced those of the name who reside among the hills of Somerset at the present day. Christian STAUFFER, grandfather of the late Lewis H. STAUFFER, conducted a commissary and general store in Lancaster City during the Revolutionary War, while Henry STAUFFER, an uncle of Lewis STAUFFER, was a soldier in that great contest. Lewis STAUFFER's grandfather and grandmother on his mother's side were pioneer residents of the State of New York. His Grandmother CUPP died at the remarkable age of 101&1/2 years, while his Grandfather CUPP passed away when almost at the century mark. The latter had been a soldier in the Revolutionary War, as was also one of his sons, and he was the father of twelve daughters and four sons. When Lewis H. STAUFFER's Grandfather CUPP and family came from New York State to Somerset County, Mr. CUPP traded a cow for about 100 acres of farm land in what now is the town of Buckstown. Real estate at that time could be bought for a song, while a cow was considered a luxury. Christopher STAUFFER, the father of Lewis H. STAUFFER, was born in Lancaster City, August 21, 1777, and came to Somerset County many, many years ago. Christopher STAUFFER taught school for quite a number of years and was then united in marriage to Elizabeth CUPP, who was born in the State of New York on March 19, 1787. Christopher STAUFFER purchased a farm near Shanksville, Somerset County, which is now the Stauffer homestead, and it was there that Mrs. Catherine STAUFFER, the wife of a brother of Lewis H. STAUFFER, was so foully murdered in her bed last fall. To Christopher STAUFFER and his wife were born eight children as follows: Rebecca, Sarah, Mary, Lewis H., David, William, Elizabeth, and George, all of whom are now dead, Lewis H. being the last to pass away. Christopher STAUFFER died when eighty-seven years of age. Lewis H. STAUFFER was born on a farm near Lambertsville, Somerset County, June 14, 1821, and resided with his parents there until he attained his majority. On the 24th of October in the year 1852, he was united in marriage to Miss Sarah SIPE, who was born in Milford Township, Somerset County, April 28, 1824, and who was the daughter of Peter and Elizabeth SIPE. To Mr. and Mrs. Lewis STAUFFER were born the following children: Jeremiah, Edward A., Mary, Rebecca J., Sarah E., John H., Anna E., Ida, and Amanda. Jeremiah, Edward, John, and Anna E. died single, while Amanda C., died some years after having been married to Jacob THOMAS, of Conner, Somerset County, and left the following children: Herman, Bertha, Martha, Charles, Sadie, Lizzie, Moses, Mehlon, Rebecca, and Ada. Mr. STAUFFER's four surviving daughters and their children are as follows: Mary, wife of William PENROD, of Arrow, Somerset County--Amanda, Dillie, Mollie, Irvin, Lewis, Hulda, and Ruth; Rebecca, wife of Jeremiah REAM, of Scalp Level--Sadie Viola, Harry E., Rolla G., Ora Mabel, and A. Earl; Sarah E., widow of the late Moses SAYLOR--Martin and Harry; Ida, wife of A.H. BURNS, of Pittsburg--Florence, Kenneth, and Olive. Mrs. Lewis H. STAUFFER died August 17, 1898, at Arrow, aged seventy-four years, three months, and nineteen days. The suviving grandchildren of Lewis STAUFFER number twenty-five, while the following great-grandchildren still live: Irving Jennings CRISSEY, Myron Harrold CRISSEY, and Mildren CRISSEY, Lloyd and Verda SHAFFER, and Ina Louella and Alfred Morris KEIM. Lewis H. STAUFFER remained in Lambertsville until shortly after his marriage, following which he resided in various parts of Somerset County. During his migrations through the county, Mr. STAUFFER followed the vocation of a farmer until he located at Buckstown, where he worked as a cooper for a number of years. From Buckstown he went to Arrow, where his wife died, and since that time he had been making his home with his daughters. He, like his father, grandfather, and other of his ancestors, was given long life, and at the time of his death he had reached the age of eighty-five years, ten months, and eight days. From the time he attained his majority, Lewis STAUFFER always voted the Republican ticket, and it was his policy never to miss casting his vote. He lived up to his policy, too, and it was only in recent years and on account of his infirmities that he missed filing his ballot for his favorite candidates of the Republican party. For two terms Mr. STAUFFER very proficiently served as Supervisor of the township in which he resided. He made it a point not to forget his religion and he joined the Lutheran Church when a young man, being an attendant at services of that congregation wherever he went. From the home of his daughter in the Eighth Ward, the remains of Mr. STAUFFER were taken to Scalp Level, the funeral cortege having left for that town at 4 o'clock this afternoon. At 7 o'clock this evening services will be held in the Scalp Level Lutheran Church, following which the corpse will be taken to the home of Jeremiah REAM, of that place, and on Tuesday morning it will be taken to Lambertsville, where burial will be made. Undertaker John Pendry, of the city, is the funeral director in charge."1
