John Sipe Sr.1

M, b. 15 May 1822, d. 8 May 1904
     John Sipe Sr. was born on 15 May 1822 at Milford Township, Somerset County, Pennsylvania.1 He was the son of Jacob Sipe and Elizabeth Dull.1 John Sipe Sr. married Sarah "Sally" Bittner in 1844 at Milford Township, Somerset County, Pennsylvania.2 John Sipe Sr. died on 8 May 1904 at Somerset, Somerset County, Pennsylvania, at age 81.1 His obituary read, "After an illness of several years from stomach trouble, complicated with other diseases, John Sipe, one of the oldest residents of Johnstown, passed away Sunday night at 7:45 o’clock at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Mary A. Lohr, aged 81 years, 11 months and 23 days. John Sipe was born in Milford Township, May 15, 1822, and passed the greater part of his life near his birthplace and in Shade Township, where he resided for a number of years. He was a drover and a farmer and was well known throughout the county, his occupation as a drover having taken him all over the county and brought him in contact with a large number of people. At the age of 22, or in 1844, he was united in marriage to Miss Sarah Bittner in Milford Township, and shortly afterward moved to Shade Township. He had been living in Johnstown for the last 10 years, making his home with his daughter mentioned above. His wife died many years ago and is buried in the cemetery at Lambertsville. Mr. Sipe was the father of 10 children, but four of whom survive, as follows: Henry R., of Derry; William H., of Latrobe; Fred R. and Mrs. Mary A. Lohr, of Johnstown. The funeral will be held today, the remains to be taken to Lambertsville on the morning train over the S & C Branch. They will be laid to rest there by the side of his wife."2
