Doris Mae Porlier died on 2 February 2004 at age 78.1 Her obituary read, "Doris May (Porlier) Van Zandt, 78, of Battle Creek, and formerly of Marshall, died peacefully in her own home in the loving care of her family on Monday, February 2, 2004. She was born June 25, 1925, in Kalamazoo, the daughter of Myron M. and Agnes M. (Smith) Porlier. Doris previously worked while in high school as an Usherette at the Regent and Bijou Theaters for 4 yrs; Sales Clerk at L.W. Robinson of Battle Creek then Redmonds in Owosso; worked 12 yrs. at the Kenny Corporation in the office as a Reviewer of insurance policy applications. She took time off to be a mother and homemaker taking care of their children as they were growing. She finished her working career at Henninks Luggage for ten years as a Manager and Sales Clerk. She married Warren E. Van Zandt on December 23, 1943, in Marshall, and recently celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary with her husband and family. She is survived by her husband: Warren E. Van Zandt, Battle Creek, MI; a son: Ray D. Van Zandt & Sharon Gilkison of Battle Creek; three daughters: Donna M. & Joe Fred Jurs of Melbourne, Florida, Jill A. & Mike Forshey and Susan K. & Fred B. Bachman both of Battle Creek; four granddaughters: Jennifer & David Grace of Vicksburg, Sarah & John Boven of Kalamazoo, Marcelle Marcie Bowman of Las Cruces, New Mexico, Kari Michelle & Craig Grestini of Thornton, CO; two grandsons: Craig Bowman of Lexington, KY and Matthew Corrigan of Farmington, MI; and three great grandchildren: Shelby and Casey Grace both of Vicksburg, MI; and Jordan Grace of Ada, Ohio. And, an adopted daughter Liz Lambert of Battle Creek. She was preceded in death by her father in 1963 and her mother in 1983, a sister Marcelle Wasielewski in 1978 and her brother-in-law Harry Wasielewski in Jan. 2004. Doris had attended Marshall High School and graduated with the class of 1943 from Battle Creek Central. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church where she was active in the St. Mary's Society. She was a member with her husband at Riverside Country Club from 1948-1996 and a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 298. She had been a Cub Scout Den Mother and a Girl Scout Leader. In her youth, Doris really enjoyed: swimming, playing golf, playing softball and playing cards. In the earlier years she enjoyed staying at their summer cottage at Long Lake in Coldwater, MI. When she was older, she enjoyed collecting figurines of "angels", reading, watching television, visiting her dear friends in the neighborhood, doing crossword puzzles, and her "greatest pleasure" has come from family gatherings (especially at 4th of July, Labor Day, and family birthdays) and she always enjoyed talking on the phone daily to her family before she went into the nursing home. While in Laurels of Bedford her family visited her almost daily and always enjoyed the piece of pie her son brought her. Visitation will be held after 4 pm Tuesday at the Bachman Hebble Funeral Service, where the family will be present Tuesday from 4-6 pm and Wednesday from 2-4 and 6-8 pm with the Rosary will be said for Doris at 7pm Wednesday in the Bachman Funeral Chapel. Funeral services will be held Thursday, 11:30 AM at the St. Joseph Catholic Church with Rev. Fr. Charles Fischer of St. Philip Catholic Church officiating. Burial will be at the Fort Custer National Cemetery. Memorial tributes may be made to Steven Wasielewski Scholarship Fund % Marshall Public Schools or Lifespan for Hospice or Alzheimer's Diseases. Arrangements by the Bachman Hebble Funeral Service, a member by invitation Selected Independent Funeral Homes." She was buried at Ft. Custer National Cemetery, Augusta, Kalamazoo County, Michigan.1
