Samuel Wakefield McNutt1

M, b. 8 October 1827, d. 12 April 1893
Samuel Wakefield McNutt
Samuel Wakefield McNutt was born on 8 October 1827 at Brush Valley Township, Indiana County, Pennsylvania.1 He was the son of Johnathon William McNutt and Elizabeth Wakefield.1 Samuel Wakefield McNutt married Catherine Jamison, daughter of John Jamison, on 15 March 1850.1 Samuel Wakefield McNutt died on 12 April 1893 at East Liverpool, Columbiana County, Ohio, at age 65.1 His obituary read, "The Last Roll Call Samuel McNutt Dies Suddenly Last Evening - Death came suddenly to Samuel W. McNutt last evening. Mr. McNutt had moved with his family Tuesday from the Calcutta Road to near the corner of Third and Washington streets. He had been feeling slightly ill all day, and was walking throught a front room of the house about 5 o'clock. He sat down on a sofa and almost instantly died from dropsy of the heart. Several members of the family entered the room just as he was expiring, but could do nothing for him, and soon he had passed away. Samuel W. McNutt was born in Indiana Co. Pa., in the year 1826, being 67 years old at the time of his death. He spent his boyhood days in the Keystone state, and on March 15,1850, was married to Miss Catherine Jamison. When the country's interest were at stake and the rebellion broke out he left his home and enlisted Aug 24, 1864, in Company H, regiment 306, United States Volunteers, acting as bugler while in the service. On June 29, 1865 he recieved his discharge at Richmond, Va and returned to his Pennsylvania home. About eight ??? ???? ?? the family removed to this city and have since resided on the Calcutta road. Mr. McNutt was employed at the Knowles, Taylor & Knowles pottery as warehouseman until last summer, when he was compelled to cease his labors owing to ill health. A wife and six children are left to mourn his demise; Mrs. E.W. Polland, Mrs. Richard Albright, Mrs. Solomon Overdorff, John McNutt, William McNutt and Miss Carrie McNutt, all of this city. Samuel McNutt residing in the adjoining house on Third Street is a cousin of the deceased. Mrs. Jacob Overdorffk Dubois, Pa., Mrs. John McNutt, Mechanicsburg, Pa., and Mrs. Joseph Pittman and Mrs. Schroder of Kansas are sisters of the deceased. A number of relatives have been summoned by telegramsm and will attend the funeral. The knowledge that Samuel McNutt was ready to answer to the last roll call serves to soften the grief of the bereaved wife and children. A life in the membership of the Methodist Episcopal church since boyhood days, and a class leader in the First Church in this city, he always performed his duties arduously. In Army life his record is also a grand one. Midst the cannon's roar and smoke of the battle he fought valiantly for his country, never shirking but always eager to push forward. As a member and chaplain of General Lyon Post No 44, G.A.R. he was held in high esteem by all who knew him, and the vacancy caused in the camp is a hard one to fill. He will be missed and his death mourned until foes and friends alike meet before the Great Commander. The funeral will take place at 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon from the First Methodist church. Revs. Dr. Locke and J. A. Dafoe will officiate. Internment will be made in Riverview cemetery."2 He was buried at Riverview Cemetery, East Liverpool, Columbiana County, Ohio.
