Bernard Dale Poling1

M, b. 14 April 1916, d. 19 November 2011
Bernard Dale Poling was born on 14 April 1916 at Grafton, Taylor County, West Virginia.2,3 He was the son of H. Clarence Poling and Clara A. Strickler.3 Bernard Dale Poling married Dessie Leora McNutt, daughter of Samuel Chapman McNutt and Ina Belle Hudnell, on 8 October 1942.4,3 Bernard Dale Poling died on 19 November 2011 at Greensboro, Greene County, Pennsylvania, at age 95.5 His obituary read, "Bernard Dale Poling age 95, fell asleep in the arms of God on Saturday, Nov. 19, 2011, following a courageous battle with congestive heart failure. He was born April 14, 1916 in Grafton, W.Va., a son of the late Clarence and Clara (Poling) Poling, and resided his entire adult life in Canton and Waynesburg, Ohio areas
until moving to Greensboro, Pa., in June 2011. He was of Protestant faith and had accepted Jesus Christ as his personal savior and had been baptized at the age of 92.
When his health permitted, he attended the Sugar Grove Baptist Church in Greensboro. On Oct. 8, 1942, he married Dessie Leora McNutt, who preceded him in death June 19, 1985. He had lived through the great depression and as a young man traveled across the United States by hopping trains to find work. Prior to his death, he shared many stories of his train-traveling adventures with his children and grandchildren. He had a wealth of history to share. He had such a passion for trains that on his 80th birthday he was treated to a train ride to the Grand Canyon by his daughter, Darlene, and her husband, Tom. He had worked at various jobs throughout his lifetime, some of which included farming, the railroad, steel mills, the coal mine, and was even part of the crew that had built a replica of the first boat used on the Erie Canal. He had owned his own sanitation business in the early 1960s, and later retired from the U.S. Ceramic Tile Co. in East Sparta, Ohio. After his retirement, he and his wife traveled around to various orchards in Ohio picking apples and during the winter months traveled to Florida to pick oranges, tangelos and grapefruit. He also enjoyed selling items at various flea markets and taking scenic pictures of all the places he had traveled. He will always be fondly remembered as 'Our Snap-Happy Pappy' and will be greatly missed by all who loved him. He is survived by a son, Harold Poling of
Canton; seven daughters and three sons-in-law, Doris Ryan, of Wheeling, W.Va., Margie and Roy Champers, of Carrollton, Ohio, Margaret Decker, of Woodsfield, Ohio, Mary Hughes, of Greensboro, Pa., Judith O'Neal, of Canton, Ohio, Donna and Bill Anderson, of Hartville,
Ohio, and Darlene and Tom Brown, of Waynesburg, Pa; a daughter- in-law, Josephine Rogers, of Andover, Ohio; along with 28 grandchildren; several great- grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Beside his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a sister, Agnes Miller and her husband, James; brother, Oliver Poling; a daughter, Clara Jean Poling, who died
in infancy; three sons, Robert Dale Poling-Pitts, James Howard Poling-Pitts, and Ronnie Lee Poling; two sons-in-law, James O'Neal and Robert Decker II; a daughter-in-law, Carolyn Tolley Poling; and a grandson, David L. Decker. There will be no public service or calling hours. The Finefrock-Gordon Funeral Home in Magnolia,
Ohio is in charge of arrangements."3
