Tuscarawas County Sheriff Walt Wilson said Tammy Handrich, 28 of 5470 Boy Scout Rd was shot in the back by her estranged husband, Erich Handrich, 30, who had been living with relatives for several weeks. Hanrich then shot himself in the head, Wilson said. Tammy Handrich's 4-year-old child witnessed the shootings. The child is being cared for by relatives. The couple were not living together, Wilson said, as they had been having marital problems for the last few months. The sheriff department had been called because of domestic problems several times, the most recent around Aug. 5, Wilson said he thought the dispute was verbal, and it was about that time that Erich Handrich moved out of the residence.
Sunday Erich Handrich returned to the residence with a .44-caliber handgun. "The phone lines were cut," Wilson said. "He forced his way in through the front door, and for some reason they were both outside in the lawn near the front door. She was shot once in the back, and then he turned the gun on himself." The child went to a nearby relative's residence, and a family member called 911 at around 3:30p.m. The call was transfered to the sheriff department, and ambulance services were dispatched, Wilson said. Squads included Fairfield Township, Dover Fire Department Emergance Squad, Smith Ambulance and Mineral City Emergancy Squad. Wilson said that he, Lt. Orvis Campbell and coroner's investigator Cathy Clarke worked on the case since it began Sunday. Clarke said she arrived at the scene around 4:30 and pronounced Erich dead at the scene. Tammy Handrich was taken to Union Hospital emergancy room where she was pronounced dead, Clarke said. Autopsies will be performed today with the results and ruling to follow, Clarke said. Wilson said collected evidence will be submitted to the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation for analysis as part of the investigation. It's pretty clear that that's what happened--murder-suicide, Wilson said."4 He was buried at Dover Burial Park, Dover, Tuscarawas County, Ohio.1,2
