He died four years later, in February 1224/5, having married about 1212 Maud, a sister of the Surety William Marshall. In her right, Hugh acquired the Earldom of Pembroke, and in this rank bore the royal sceptre at the coronation of King Richard. He was born in 1175. He was the son of Roger Bigod Second Earl of Norfolk and Isabela de Warenne. Hugh Bigod married Maud Marshall, daughter of William Marshall 'Black Will', Earl of Pembroke and Isabel de Clare Countess Strigoil, in 1207. Hugh Bigod died between 18 February 1224 and 1225 at England.

William de Ferrers William de Ferrers, fourth Earl of Derby, rebelled against Henry II, and marching at the head of the Leicester men (in the 19th year of Henry II) upon Nottingham, then kept for the king by Reginald de Luci, got possession of the town, which he sacked, putting the greater part of the inhabitants to the sword, and taking the rest prisoners. He was soon afterwards, however, reduced to submission, and obliged to surrender to the crown his castles of Tutbury and Duffield, which were demolished by order of the king.
